La historia se centra en la Princesa Elsa de Arendelle, quien tiene poderes mágicos para generar frío; una habilidad que usa para jugar con su hermana menor, la Princesa Anna.

En uno de sus juegos, Elsa hiere accidentalmente a su hermana. Sus padres, El Rey y La Reina de Arendelle, llevan a su hija Anna a una colonia de trolls liderados por Grand Pabbie. Él la cura, y por su bien «borra» los recuerdos de ella con Elsa, su hermana mayor; y le aconseja a Elsa controlar sus poderes mágicos.

Al cumplir los 21 Elsa es coronada, al conocer la propuesta del principe Hans a su hermana, desata sus poderes y huye del reino.
